Which London airport are you flying from?
London is served by six commercial airports and three business aviation airports, and they sit on every side of the city. The cards above give the distance and typical drive time from Westminster to each one, calculated from road routing. The guide below explains how they differ once you are in the car.
Which airport is quickest to reach from central London?
London City is the quickest, about nine miles from Westminster and roughly 35 minutes by car outside the rush. Heathrow comes next at about 16 miles and 36 minutes. Northolt, which handles some private and government flights, is similar. Everything else is at least 30 miles away and usually more than an hour.
Distance is only part of it. Heathrow is reached by motorway almost all the way from west London, so it is often quicker than its mileage suggests. London City sits at the end of a route through the City and Docklands, so its short distance can take longer than expected at 08:30 on a weekday. Where you start in London changes the answer: from Canary Wharf, City is fifteen minutes away and Heathrow more than an hour.
How do Gatwick and Heathrow compare by road?
From Westminster, Gatwick is about 30 miles south and usually takes 70 minutes off-peak; Heathrow is about 16 miles west and takes around 36 minutes. The Gatwick drive leaves London through Brixton and Streatham on the A23 before joining the M23, so the first half is urban and slow.
From south London, the comparison shifts. From Croydon, Sutton or Wimbledon, Gatwick is closer than it looks on a map of central London, and the drive avoids central traffic entirely. The two airports are about 45 miles apart by the M25, a route we drive often for passengers connecting between them.
When do Stansted, Luton and Southend make sense?
These three are mainly served by short-haul and low-cost airlines, and they suit travellers who live on their side of London. Stansted is north-east, reached by the M11; from Westminster it is about 41 miles and over an hour and a quarter. Luton is north-west on the M1, about 37 miles and a little over an hour. Southend is due east in Essex, about 43 miles away along the A127 or A13.
From Hampstead or Barnet, Luton can be the most convenient airport in London. From Hackney, Stratford or Walthamstow, Stansted is often closer than Gatwick. From Havering or Barking, Southend is worth checking before you book a flight.

What about private jets and business aviation?
Biggin Hill, in the London Borough of Bromley, is the nearest dedicated business aviation airport to central London. Farnborough, in Hampshire, is a purpose-built business airport to the south-west, reached by the M3. RAF Northolt, near Ruislip, handles a limited number of civil business flights alongside its military role. Private jets also use dedicated terminals at Luton, Stansted and London City.
At these terminals, timings are precise and the walk from aircraft to car is short, so chauffeurs arrive early and wait at the terminal building. Tell us the handling agent or FBO when you book.
What airport charges affect a car journey?
Most London airports charge vehicles to drop off at the terminal forecourt. At Heathrow, the charge is £7 per entry at every terminal, with a 10-minute maximum stay since January 2026. Other airports run their own schemes, and the amounts change from time to time. Collecting a passenger usually means paying for time in a terminal car park.
When you travel with us, these charges are included in your price. You do not need to pay them, register a number plate or remember a deadline.
How early should you leave for each airport?
Work back from the time your airline recommends arriving, usually two hours for short-haul and three for long-haul, and add the drive time for the hour you are travelling. For a weekday afternoon departure from central London to Heathrow, that often means leaving around three hours before a long-haul flight. For Gatwick or Stansted, add at least another half hour.
London City is the exception, with a compact terminal and short walking distances. Many passengers aim to arrive an hour or so before a short-haul flight there. Check your airline’s guidance, and tell us your flight time when you book; we will suggest a pickup time.
Which airport is best at night or very early?
Heathrow and Gatwick handle the most early departures, and the roads to both are at their quietest before 06:00, so a pre-dawn run from central London is usually quick. Stansted and Luton also have many early flights, but they are further away, which means a very early pickup from the capital.
London City has a night-time curfew and a short operating day, with restrictions at weekends, so check your flight times carefully. For late arrivals, public transport thins out after midnight, which is when a pre-booked car is most useful. Your chauffeur follows the flight, so a late-night delay does not leave you stranded.
Good to know
Questions, answered
Which London airport is closest to the centre?
London City, about nine miles from Westminster by road. It mainly handles short-haul flights to Europe and domestic routes.
Can you take me between two London airports?
Yes. Heathrow to Gatwick is about 45 miles via the M25 and usually takes around an hour off-peak. We run transfers between every pair of London airports.
Do you cover all Heathrow terminals?
Yes: Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Gatwick’s North and South Terminals are both covered too.
Is Southend really a London airport?
It is in Essex, about 43 miles east of Westminster, and markets itself as London Southend. For east London and Essex it can be very convenient.
Which airport should I choose if I have a choice of flights?
Compare the total door-to-door time, not just the flight. A cheaper fare from an airport ninety minutes away can cost more once the drive, the earlier start and the extra time are counted.
Are the drive times guaranteed?
No drive time in London can be guaranteed. Ours come from road routing with a rush-hour allowance, and chauffeurs check live traffic before every journey.
