Of all the ways into central and east London from Stansted, the drive to Canary Wharf is one of the most straightforward. The route stays on the eastern side of the capital, with motorway and fast dual carriageway almost all the way, and it avoids the slow final approach through Aldgate and the City that journeys to Liverpool Street face.

This guide explains the route, compares it with the train, which needs a change, and covers where the car drops you on the estate and how early to leave for a flight.

This guide explains how a Stansted to Canary Wharf transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.

About 38 miles door to door. The rush-hour bar includes a standard allowance for London traffic; chauffeurs pick the line on the day.

Which way does the chauffeur go?

South on the M11 to its end at the North Circular, then east on the A406 to the A13 at Beckton, and west on the A13 to the Canary Wharf estate. It is about 38 miles. When the North Circular is slow, the chauffeur may stay on the A12 through Stratford and cut south through Bow to the Limehouse Link instead.

Because the route stays east of the City, it is more predictable than journeys into central London, and it is outside the Congestion Charging Zone throughout.

How long should you allow?

About 64 minutes off-peak and around 83 minutes in the rush. The slowest points are usually the North Circular near the Redbridge roundabout and the A13 at Canning Town. Late at night, when many Stansted flights land, the drive can take 50 minutes or less.

Car or train?

The rail route is the Stansted Express to Liverpool Street and the Elizabeth line two stops to Canary Wharf. It works well for a light traveller, and at busy times it can be as quick as the car, but it involves a change at one of London’s busiest stations and a walk through the Canary Wharf station and malls to your building.

With luggage, children or colleagues, or for a late arrival when the trains are infrequent, the car from the terminal kerb to your building’s entrance is simpler.

Where does the car drop you on the estate?

Canary Wharf’s roads are privately managed, and many office towers are reached from a lower-level service road or a ramp. Tell us the building and the entrance your reception uses for cars. For the residential towers, give us the block name; most have a concierge who can let you know when the car arrives. For hotels, the chauffeur will use the hotel’s own set-down point.

Coming home from a holiday?

Many Canary Wharf residents fly from Stansted for European holidays and short breaks. Arriving home late in the evening with luggage, the car avoids the Stansted Express, the change at Liverpool Street and the Elizabeth line with suitcases. Tell us the children’s ages if you are travelling as a family, and the right car seats will be fitted before you land.

How early should you leave for a Stansted flight?

For a morning short-haul flight, a pickup about two and a half to three hours before departure is usually right, because Stansted’s early security queues can be long. For the first departures of the day, before 07:00, the roads are clear and the drive takes under an hour, so a pickup around 03:30 to 04:00 is typical.

London City or Stansted from Canary Wharf?

London City is only a quarter of an hour from Canary Wharf, and for the routes it serves, it is almost always the better choice. Stansted is an hour away but has many more destinations, particularly to holiday resorts and smaller European cities, often at lower fares. If your destination is served by both, compare the total journey, including the drive and the time at the airport, not only the ticket price.

For families with luggage, the difference in drive time matters more than for a business traveller with a small bag.

Arriving late on a Friday night?

Friday evenings at Stansted are busy with returning holiday and weekend flights, and the Stansted Express and the Elizabeth line are crowded with commuters and weekend travellers. A car from the terminal avoids both. After about 21:00, the M11 and the North Circular are usually clear, and the drive to the Canary Wharf estate takes well under an hour.

Travelling on business?

Stansted also has routes used by business travellers to European cities that London City does not serve. For a Canary Wharf worker flying to one of them, the car makes a day trip workable. Firms that book regularly can use an account with monthly invoicing and cost codes.

Where will the chauffeur meet you at Stansted?

In the arrivals hall of the single terminal, just past the exit from baggage reclaim, with a board showing your name. The chauffeur follows your flight and adjusts to delays, then walks you to the short stay car park.

What does the price include?

The journey, the parking at Stansted while the chauffeur waits, and Stansted’s £10 set-down charge on journeys to the airport. There is no Congestion Charge on this route. The price does not change if the flight is late or the traffic is heavy.

    Flight tracking

The chauffeur follows your flight number, so an early landing or a delay moves the pickup with it.

    Meet and greet

Your chauffeur waits in arrivals with a board showing your name, and takes the bags from there.

  3. 03

    A fixed price

Agreed when you book. Traffic, a longer route on the day or a late landing do not change it.

  4. 04

    The £10 drop-off charge

Paid by us, so you are set down at the terminal doors rather than at a bus stop.

  5. 05

    A route from live traffic

The chauffeur checks the roads before setting off and picks the line that is moving.
