Heathrow to Canary Wharf transfers
Heathrow to Canary Wharf
The drive from Heathrow to Canary Wharf is about 23 miles. Off-peak it takes roughly an hour; on a weekday evening, allow closer to an hour and twenty minutes. Your chauffeur meets you inside arrivals and takes you to the door of your building or hotel on the estate.
Canary Wharf sits at the opposite corner of London from Heathrow, so this is one of the longer airport runs inside the M25. It crosses the whole of the city, west to east, and the traffic you meet depends almost entirely on the hour you land. This page explains the route as our chauffeurs see it, gives you honest timings from our route data, and tells you when the Elizabeth line is the better call.
If you already know you want a car, book online and add your flight number. You see a fixed fare before you commit.
This guide explains how a Heathrow to Canary Wharf transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.
How long does the drive from Heathrow to Canary Wharf take?
Plan on about 60 minutes when the roads are clear and 80 minutes or more in the weekday rush. Our route data puts the distance at 22.8 miles. Early mornings, late evenings and Sunday mornings are the quick windows; Friday afternoons heading east are the slowest.
Those figures come from road routing between the terminal forecourts and Canary Wharf, with a rush-hour allowance added on top. They are a guide, not a promise. A lane closure on the Hammersmith flyover or an event at the O2 can change the picture on the day, which is why your chauffeur checks live traffic before setting off and again before joining the A4.
Which way does the chauffeur go, and why does the time vary?
The usual line is the M4 into London, the A4 through Hammersmith and Kensington, along the Embankment, and then the A1203 through the Limehouse Link tunnel, which surfaces a few hundred metres from the Canary Wharf estate. It is the most direct route, and for most of the day it is also the quickest.
The time varies because the middle third of the journey runs through central London. The motorway section from the airport rarely costs more than 15 minutes. The slow part is the stretch between Hammersmith and the Tower, where traffic lights, bus lanes and roadworks set the pace. When that section is heavy, chauffeurs can switch to the A40 and the A501 to the north, or run along the South Circular and cross at Rotherhithe. They choose on the day from live traffic, not habit.
The central section also passes through the Congestion Charging Zone. The charge is £18 a day and applies from 07:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays. Private hire vehicles pay it, so a journey through the zone in those hours costs more than one outside them. Your fixed price accounts for the time you travel.
Is a car or the Elizabeth line better for this trip?
For a single traveller with a small bag at a busy time of day, the Elizabeth line is hard to beat. It runs directly from Heathrow to Canary Wharf with no change, and the journey takes around 45 to 50 minutes.
A car earns its place in other situations. If you are travelling with luggage for a long stay, with children, or with colleagues who want to talk through a meeting on the way, the door-to-door journey matters more than the minutes. The train drops you at Canary Wharf station, which is a walk from many of the office towers and hotels on the estate, and it involves platforms, escalators and ticket barriers at both ends. A car also makes sense late at night or early in the morning, when trains run less often and the roads are at their quietest. We would rather you take the right option than book a car you did not need.
Where will you meet your chauffeur at Heathrow?
Your chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a board with your name, then walks with you to the car. At Terminal 5, pre-booked private hire vehicles wait in the car park next to the terminal, a short covered walk from arrivals. Terminals 2, 3 and 4 work the same way: the car waits in the terminal car park and your chauffeur comes to you.
Heathrow renamed its Short Stay car parks as Terminal Parking in September 2025, so you may see both names on signs. Because the chauffeur tracks your flight number, they time their walk into arrivals around the moment you land rather than the time printed on your booking. If you are held at passport control or waiting for a late bag, send a message and they will wait.

Where can the car drop you in Canary Wharf?
Most buildings on the Canary Wharf estate have a forecourt or a lay-by where a car can stop briefly, and the estate roads are private and patrolled. Tell us the building name, not only the postcode. E14 covers a wide area, and a postcode alone can send a chauffeur to the wrong side of the dock.
Hotels such as those around West India Quay and Westferry Circus have their own set-down points at the entrance. For the office towers around Canada Square, the chauffeur will use the nearest permitted stopping point and make sure you know which entrance to use. If you are staying in one of the residential towers further south on the Isle of Dogs, give us the tower name and any gate code in the notes box.
What changes on the way back to Heathrow?
The return trip follows the same roads in reverse, but the airport end works differently. Since 1 January 2026, Heathrow charges £7 each time a vehicle enters a terminal drop-off area, and there is a 10-minute maximum stay. The charge applies at all four terminals and must be paid by midnight on the day after the visit.
For a flight home, leave Canary Wharf earlier than you think you need to. We usually suggest being collected three hours before a long-haul departure and two and a half hours before a short-haul one when you are travelling in the evening peak. The eastbound traffic is not your problem on the way out, but the westbound A4 between 16:00 and 19:00 often is.

Good to know
Questions, answered
How far is Canary Wharf from Heathrow by road?
About 23 miles on the usual route along the M4, the A4 and the Limehouse Link. Alternative routes to the north or south add a few miles but can save time when central London is congested.
Do I pay the Congestion Charge on top of the fare?
No. When your journey passes through the zone during charging hours, the cost is included in the fixed price you accept. You will not be asked for anything extra on the day.
What happens if my flight lands late?
Your chauffeur follows your flight using the number you give us, so a delay moves the pickup with it. There is no need to call and rebook. If your flight is diverted to another airport, contact us and we will work out the best way to reach you.
Which car should I book for two people with large suitcases?
The Mercedes E-Class takes up to three passengers with two large cases. With more luggage than that, or golf bags and skis, choose the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases comfortably.
Can I book the return journey at the same time?
Yes. Add the return journey when you book online, with its date and time, and both legs are priced together.
