Harrow, between Heathrow and the M1

Harrow is one of the best-placed boroughs in London for flying. Heathrow is about 12 miles away and takes around 27 minutes, Luton is about 44 minutes up the M1, and RAF Northolt, for private flights, is under 20 minutes away.

The London Borough of Harrow covers Harrow on the Hill, Wealdstone, Pinner, Stanmore, Rayners Lane, Kenton and Harrow Weald, running up to the green belt on the Hertfordshire border. It is a largely suburban borough, with quiet residential roads, the steep lanes around Harrow School and a busy town centre around Harrow on the Hill station.

For air travel, the borough sits between the two main routes out of north-west London: the A312 and the A40 towards Heathrow, and the M1 and the A41 towards Luton. That gives Harrow residents a genuine choice of airport for many flights. This page compares them and covers the local details that make a pickup quick.

How long does it take from Harrow to Heathrow?

About 27 minutes off-peak and around 35 minutes in the weekday rush, on a 12-mile route that runs south through Northolt on the A312 and joins the airport’s northern perimeter road. From Pinner and Rayners Lane it is a little quicker; from Stanmore, a little longer.

Because the journey stays on the outer side of London, it avoids the worst of the central traffic. For a long-haul flight, a pickup about two and a half to three hours before departure is usually right, including time for check-in and security.

Is Luton or Heathrow better for short-haul flights?

Both work well, so look at the flight first. Luton is about 27 miles away and takes around 44 minutes via the A41 or the M1, and its compact terminal means a short walk from the drop-off area. Heathrow is quicker to reach, but its terminals are larger and busier.

For a holiday flight where the fares and times are similar, many Harrow travellers find Luton the easier overall experience. For business travel, Heathrow’s wider choice of flights and airlines usually decides it.

Can you meet private flights at RAF Northolt?

Yes. RAF Northolt, which handles civil business aviation alongside its military role, is about six miles from Harrow and around 19 minutes away. Access is controlled, so we need the handling agent’s name and the passenger details in advance. The chauffeur will go directly to the civil terminal.

Farnborough, the business aviation airport in Hampshire, is about 57 minutes away via the M25 and the M3, and we cover that too.

How do pickups work on Harrow on the Hill?

The streets around Harrow School and the old village on the hill are steep, narrow and in places restricted, with limited parking and some roads that are difficult for a larger car. Give us the exact address and any access details, and the chauffeur will plan the approach before setting off.

If you are collecting a pupil from Harrow School at the end of term, tell us the boarding house and the time, and the chauffeur will wait at the agreed point. On busy exeat and end-of-term days, many cars arrive at once, and a clear meeting point saves time for everyone.

What about Gatwick and Stansted?

Both are long journeys. Gatwick is about 53 miles via the M25 and takes around 73 minutes off-peak, or about an hour and a half in the rush. Stansted is about 46 miles via the M25 and takes around 76 minutes. For both, the fastest route is usually round the M25 rather than through London.

For early holiday departures from Gatwick, the M25 is at its best before 06:00. For a 07:00 flight, a pickup at about 03:45 is usually right.

How do town-centre and suburban pickups differ?

Harrow town centre, around St Ann’s Road and the station, has pedestrianised streets, bus lanes and a one-way system. For flats in the new towers near the station, give us the building name and the entrance with a drop-off point, and the chauffeur will meet you there.

In Pinner, Stanmore and Harrow Weald, most homes have a driveway or a quiet road outside, and the car can wait at your door. For houses on private roads or behind gates, add any codes or directions in the notes.

What is the journey home from Heathrow like?

Short, and usually straightforward. The chauffeur follows your flight, waits in the arrivals hall with a board showing your name, and walks you to the car park beside the terminal. From there, the route north through Northolt takes around half an hour to most Harrow addresses.

Many long-haul flights land early in the morning, when the roads north of the airport are still quiet. Later in the day, the A312 can slow near the A40 junction, and the chauffeur may choose a route through Ruislip instead. The price is fixed before you fly, so the route taken on the day does not change what you pay.

Which car suits a Harrow journey?

The Mercedes E-Class suits one or two travellers on the short Heathrow run. Families with holiday luggage should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases. For school trunks and end-of-term luggage, the V-Class is also the usual choice.

For groups, the V-Class keeps everyone together in one vehicle.
