Sutton, a short run to Gatwick
From Sutton, Gatwick is about 20 miles south and takes around 34 minutes on a clear road, one of the quickest Gatwick journeys in London. Heathrow is about 46 minutes away round the M25, and Biggin Hill about 38.
The London Borough of Sutton covers Sutton town centre, Cheam, Carshalton, Wallington, Belmont, Worcester Park, Hackbridge and Beddington, on the southern edge of London next to Surrey. It is a mostly residential borough, with good roads south towards the M25 and no Underground stations at all.
For flying, that position is a real advantage. Gatwick is closer to Sutton than to almost any other London borough, and the route never touches central London. This page compares Gatwick and Heathrow from here, explains when a train might suit you instead, and covers pickups from the borough’s homes and its two major hospitals.
How long does it take from Sutton to Gatwick?
About 34 minutes off-peak and around 44 minutes in the weekday rush. The usual route runs south through Belmont and Banstead to the M25 at Reigate Hill, then a short stretch round to the M23 and the airport. From Wallington and Carshalton, chauffeurs may take the A23 through Coulsdon instead.
That makes Gatwick an easy airport for everything from early holiday flights to long-haul leisure routes. For a 07:00 departure, a pickup at about 04:20 leaves two hours at the terminal, and the roads at that hour are almost empty.
Is Heathrow a good choice from Sutton?
It is further, but still straightforward. Heathrow is about 33 miles away by the fastest route, which runs round the M25 anticlockwise to the M4 spur, and the drive takes around 46 minutes off-peak and about an hour in the rush. From Worcester Park and Cheam, the A3 and the A316 can be as quick.
If you are comparing the same flight from both airports, Gatwick is usually about 10 to 15 minutes closer. For long-haul flights where Heathrow has the better options, the extra time is small.
Is the train a sensible alternative?
For some journeys. Rail trips from Sutton to Gatwick usually involve a change, often at East Croydon, and reaching Heathrow by train means going into central London and out again. With light luggage and a daytime flight near a station, it can work.
For most Sutton residents, the car is simpler: it goes from your door to the terminal kerb in well under an hour, without platforms, lifts or changes. It is also the dependable choice for very early flights, when trains are few.
Can you collect from the Royal Marsden or St Helier?
Yes. The Royal Marsden in Belmont and St Helier Hospital in Carshalton both see patients and families who travel from abroad or need to reach an airport after treatment. The chauffeur will wait at the entrance you choose, help with bags, and allow extra time at the pickup if you need it.
Tell us in the notes if the passenger needs help getting in and out of the car or uses a wheelchair, and we will plan the vehicle and the pickup point around it.

What about Biggin Hill and Farnborough?
London Biggin Hill is about 15 miles east and takes around 38 minutes via the A232 and the A233. Farnborough is about 37 miles west and takes around 56 minutes via the M25 and the M3. For private flights at either airport, tell us the handling agent and the flight details, and the chauffeur will go directly to the right building.
How do pickups work in Sutton?
Most homes in Cheam, Carshalton Beeches, Wallington and Worcester Park have a driveway or a quiet road outside, and the car will wait at your door. Sutton town centre has a pedestrianised High Street and a one-way system around it, and the chauffeur will meet you at the nearest point where a car can stop.
For flats in the new developments near Sutton station and in Hackbridge, give us the building name and the entrance with a drop-off area. For houses on private roads in Belmont and South Cheam, add any gate codes in the notes.
Can you bring me home after a late landing at Gatwick?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful journeys we run from Sutton. Many holiday flights land at Gatwick late in the evening, and delays push some past midnight, when the rail connections home are slow or finished. The chauffeur follows the flight, waits in arrivals however late it lands, and has you home in well under an hour on clear roads.
Does Epsom Derby week affect Sutton journeys?
It can. The Derby meeting at Epsom Downs, just over the borough boundary, brings heavy traffic to Belmont, Banstead and the roads towards Reigate Hill each June, which is the usual route to the M25 for Gatwick. On those days, chauffeurs from the south of the borough may take the A23 through Coulsdon instead, or suggest a slightly earlier pickup. We check the racing calendar when you book.
Which car suits a Sutton journey?
The Mercedes E-Class suits one or two travellers on the short run to Gatwick. Families with holiday luggage should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases, with room for pushchairs and car seats. For groups heading to a wedding abroad, the V-Class keeps everyone together.
