Southampton cruise transfers

Southampton, to the right terminal

Southampton is about 67 miles from Heathrow and 80 miles from central London. The drive from Heathrow takes around 80 minutes off-peak; from Westminster allow nearer two hours. Tell us your ship and terminal, and the car goes to the door.

Southampton is Britain’s busiest cruise port and the home port for many of the ships that sail from the UK, including vessels from Cunard and P&O Cruises. It has five cruise terminals spread around the docks, and on a summer Saturday several large ships can turn around on the same day, with thousands of passengers arriving and leaving within a few hours.

This page explains how to plan the journey from London or the airports, why the terminal name matters, and how to size the car for cruise luggage.

Which Southampton terminal does your ship use?

Southampton’s cruise terminals are the Ocean Terminal, the Mayflower Terminal, the City Cruise Terminal, the QEII Terminal and the Horizon Cruise Terminal. They sit in different parts of the port, and the drive from one to another through dock gates and city traffic can take a quarter of an hour or more.

Your cruise documents name the terminal, usually a week or two before sailing. Add it to your booking notes as soon as you know it. If the line changes the terminal at short notice, which does happen, send us the update and the chauffeur will go to the new one.

How long does the drive to Southampton take?

From Heathrow, the route runs round the M25 to the M3 and south past Winchester to the port, about 80 minutes when traffic is light. From central London, it is a longer run out through south-west London to the M3, typically close to two hours.

Gatwick81 miles106 min138 min
Westminster80 miles109 min158 min
London City89 miles142 min185 min

Figures come from road routing, with an allowance for busy periods in the last column. Summer Saturdays, bank holiday weekends and the approach roads to the docks on a busy turnaround day can all add time beyond it.

When should you leave for embarkation?

Your cruise line gives you an arrival window, often allocated by deck or booking type. Aim to arrive near the start of it. Work back from that time using the busy-period drive time, not the off-peak one, and add a margin: a ship does not wait, and the last miles into the port on a turnaround morning can be slow.

From central London for a midday boarding window, that usually means leaving around 08:30 to 09:00. From Heathrow, an arrival on an overnight flight landing at 06:00 leaves enough time only if the flight is on schedule, which is why many passengers fly in the day before.

Can you take us straight from Heathrow to the ship?

Yes, and it is one of the most common journeys we make. Give us your flight number and the ship’s name. The chauffeur follows your flight, meets you in arrivals, and takes you and your cruise luggage directly to the terminal.

Leave a generous gap between your scheduled landing and the end of the boarding window. Long-haul arrivals, passport queues and baggage reclaim can easily take two hours, and the drive adds another hour and a half. If your flight is due to land on the morning of departure, talk to us and to your cruise line about whether a night in a hotel first would be safer.

Which car suits cruise luggage?

Book one size larger than you would for a flight. A fortnight’s cruise with formal evenings means big suitcases, suit carriers and often a separate bag for shoes, and on the way home there are usually a few purchases from on board. A couple who would take a saloon to the airport should normally book the V-Class to the port.

For families or friends sailing together, the V-Class keeps everyone and every case in one vehicle, which makes the handover to the porters at the terminal much simpler.

What is the drop-off like at the terminal?

Each terminal has a drop-off area where porters take checked luggage straight from the car. Attach the luggage tags your cruise line sends before departure while you are still at home, so the porters can take each case as soon as the boot opens. You then walk into the terminal with hand luggage and documents only.

Keep passports, medication and anything you need for the first afternoon with you. Checked cases reach cabins through the day and can take until the evening.

What happens when the ship comes back?

Disembarkation starts early in the morning and runs in groups. Your cruise line allocates a time based on your onward travel and cabin, and the moment you walk out depends on how quickly luggage is unloaded. Give us the ship, the date and your disembarkation group if you know it.

Your chauffeur waits near the terminal exit. If you are heading straight to Heathrow or Gatwick for a flight home, allow plenty of time: many ships return on the same morning, the roads out of the port get busy, and an afternoon flight is far safer than a morning one.
