Hackney airport transfers
Hackney, east of the City and close to the Docks
From Hackney, London City Airport is about seven miles away and takes around 21 minutes on a clear road. Stansted is an hour up the M11, and Heathrow, on the far side of London, is closer to an hour than most people expect.
Hackney runs from Shoreditch and Hoxton on the edge of the City to Stoke Newington, Clapton and the marshes along the River Lea. It takes in Dalston, Hackney Central, Homerton, Hackney Wick and a long list of busy high streets, and it has less Underground coverage than almost any other inner London borough, with the Overground doing much of the work instead.
That makes a car more useful here than in many parts of central London, especially with luggage. It also means understanding one feature of Hackney’s streets: the low-traffic neighbourhoods, which close many residential roads to through traffic. This page covers both, along with the drive to each airport.
Which airport is closest to Hackney?
London City. The drive runs south-east along the A12 or through the Limehouse Link to the A13, about seven miles in total, and takes around 21 minutes off-peak and 27 minutes at busy times. For short-haul business trips and city breaks, it is the obvious choice.
Stansted is next, at about 35 miles and an hour via the A12 and the M11. Heathrow is about 22 miles and 58 minutes, Luton about 68 minutes and Gatwick around 71 minutes. The full table with rush-hour times is further down the page.
How do low-traffic neighbourhoods affect a pickup?
Hackney has introduced low-traffic neighbourhoods across much of the borough. Planters, bollards and camera-enforced filters stop through traffic on many residential streets, though every address can still be reached by car from at least one direction.
For a chauffeur who does not know the area, that can mean a frustrating loop around a filter. Give us your full address and postcode, and if you know which end of the street a car can enter from, say so in the notes. The chauffeur will plan the approach before setting off and, if your door is right beside a filter, may wait at the open end and message you.
On main roads such as Mare Street, Kingsland Road and Stoke Newington High Street, bus lanes and loading restrictions apply for much of the day. The chauffeur will stop on the nearest side street rather than in a bus lane.
How long does Heathrow take from Hackney?
About 58 minutes off-peak and around 75 minutes in the weekday rush, on a 22-mile route that usually crosses central London on the A501 and the A40 or the A4. On a clear evening it can be quicker, and at 08:30 on a Monday it can be slower.
The rail alternative is the Overground to Highbury and Islington or Whitechapel, then the Elizabeth line or the Victoria and Piccadilly lines onward. With a small bag it works, but it involves at least one change. For a family or an early flight, the car from your door is the simpler option.
Is Stansted a good choice from here?
For European holidays, often yes. The drive via the A12, the A406 and the M11 takes about an hour off-peak and about 80 minutes in the rush. Before 06:00, it is usually faster, which suits Stansted’s early wave of departures.
The Stansted Express stops at Tottenham Hale, a short Overground or bus ride from much of the borough. It is a fair choice with light luggage. With several cases, or for flights before the first trains, a car is easier.

Can you collect from Hackney Wick and the Olympic Park area?
Yes. Hackney Wick has a lot of new flats, studios and warehouse conversions, often with entrances on narrow side streets or canal-side paths that cars cannot use. Give us the building name and the nearest road the car can reach, and the chauffeur will wait there.
The area around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is busy on event days at the London Stadium. If your pickup falls on one, we will plan the route around the crowds.
What about getting home after a late flight?
This is where a booked car earns its keep in Hackney. Flights into Stansted and Luton often land late in the evening, and delays push many past the last convenient trains. With few Underground stations in the borough, the last part of the journey home by public transport can mean a night bus with luggage.
The chauffeur follows your flight, waits in the arrivals hall however late it lands, and drives you to the door. At night, the roads are clear, and the drive from Stansted usually takes well under an hour. The fixed price does not change if the flight is delayed.
Which car suits a Hackney journey?
The Mercedes E-Class suits one or two people and fits easily into narrow streets. Families should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases; it is also the best choice for a group heading to a festival or a wedding abroad with bulky luggage.
If you are travelling with instruments, bikes or equipment for work, describe them in the notes. We will match the car to what you are carrying, not only to the number of passengers.

How long does it take from Dalston to London City Airport?
Around 20 to 25 minutes off-peak, depending on traffic on the A12 and through Limehouse.
Can a car reach my street inside a low-traffic neighbourhood?
Yes. Every address can be reached from at least one direction. Tell us your postcode and any access details, and the chauffeur will plan the approach.
How far is Stansted from Hackney?
About 35 miles, typically an hour off-peak via the A12 and the M11.
