Notting Hill airport transfers

Notting Hill, next to the Westway

Notting Hill sits beside the A40 Westway, which runs west towards the airport. Heathrow is about 15 miles away and takes around 30 minutes on a clear road; Northolt, for private flights, is even closer.

Notting Hill is a district of pastel terraces, communal garden squares and the long, winding Portobello Road, spreading between Holland Park Avenue, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Grove. It is residential for most of the week, lively on Saturdays and completely transformed on one weekend every August.

For airport journeys, its position is excellent: the Westway gives a fast run west, and Holland Park Avenue leads to Shepherd’s Bush and the M4. This page explains which route chauffeurs take, how the Portobello market and the Notting Hill Carnival change pickups, and how to plan around the communal gardens that many houses back onto.

Which route do chauffeurs take to Heathrow?

Two good options, chosen on the day. The Westway, reached from Ladbroke Grove or Westbourne Park, runs over west London to the A40 and the A312, arriving at Heathrow’s northern side. Holland Park Avenue leads to Shepherd’s Bush and down to the M4 at Chiswick, which suits the central terminals.

Either way, the journey is about 15 miles and takes around 30 minutes off-peak, or about 44 minutes in the weekday rush. The Westway is often quicker in the evening; the M4 can be better in the early morning when the A40 inbound is busy.

What happens on Carnival weekend?

The Notting Hill Carnival takes place over the August bank holiday weekend, and it closes most of the district to traffic from early on the Sunday until late on the Monday. Barriers go up the day before, parking is suspended across a wide area, and the streets fill with more than a million visitors over the two days.

If you are flying out that weekend, we suggest leaving on the Saturday or early on the Sunday morning, before the closures take hold. If you must travel during Carnival, we will agree a meeting point on the outside of the closed area, for example at Holland Park Avenue or on the Harrow Road, and you will need to walk there with your luggage. For arrivals that weekend, the chauffeur will drop you at the closest open point to your home.

How does the Portobello market affect Saturday pickups?

On Saturdays, the Portobello Road market fills the road itself and the streets around it with stalls and shoppers from early morning until late afternoon. Cars cannot use large parts of Portobello Road, and the nearby side streets are slow.

If you live on or just off the market, the chauffeur will wait on a quieter street to the east or west, such as one of the crescents off Ladbroke Grove, and message you. For a Saturday flight, leaving before about 08:00 avoids most of the crowds.

How do pickups work around the communal gardens?

Many Notting Hill houses back onto private communal gardens, and some front doors face the garden rather than the street. Tell us if the entrance you use is on the garden side or at a mews behind, and the chauffeur will wait at the right gate or street.

The streets themselves are narrow, heavily parked and often one-way, with some areas inside low-traffic schemes. The chauffeur will stop as close as the street allows and walk to your door for the bags.

What about summer evenings around Holland Park?

From June to August, Opera Holland Park stages performances in the park most evenings, and the streets around Holland Park Avenue and Kensington High Street are busier as the audience arrives and leaves. It rarely causes long delays, but for a late-evening pickup from a house near the park, the chauffeur will allow a few extra minutes and may approach from the Ladbroke Grove side.

If you are heading to the airport straight from a performance, tell us the finishing time. The chauffeur will wait on a quiet street a short walk from the park gates rather than in the queue of taxis on Holland Park Avenue.

Can you meet private flights at Northolt?

Yes. RAF Northolt, which handles civil business aviation, is about 11 miles from Notting Hill and around 28 minutes away via the Westway. Access is controlled, so we need the handling agent and the passenger details in advance, and the chauffeur will go to the civil terminal.

What about Luton, London City and Gatwick?

Luton is about 36 miles and just under an hour away via the Westway, the North Circular and the M1, which makes it a realistic choice for short-haul flights from Notting Hill. London City is about 46 minutes east across central London. Gatwick is about 72 minutes south, usually via Earl’s Court, the river and the A3.

Is Notting Hill inside the Congestion Charge zone?

No. The zone’s western edge is Park Lane, a mile or more to the east, and all of Notting Hill is outside it. Journeys west to Heathrow or north to Luton do not go near it.
