Tower Hamlets airport transfers
Tower Hamlets, minutes from the Docks runway
London City Airport is about three miles from the heart of Tower Hamlets and takes around 12 minutes on a clear road. Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick are each a little over an hour, which gives the borough an unusually even choice.
Tower Hamlets runs east from the edge of the City through Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Stepney, Bethnal Green, Mile End and Bow, and south to the river at Wapping, Shadwell, Limehouse and the Isle of Dogs. It is one of London’s densest boroughs, with narrow historic streets, large estates and a skyline of new towers around Canary Wharf.
For air travel, its greatest asset is London City Airport, just across the River Lea in Newham. The other airports are further, but all are within about an hour. This page covers each of them, the rail alternatives from Whitechapel, and the local details that make a pickup quick. Our separate Canary Wharf guide covers the estate itself.
How quick is London City from here?
Very. From Limehouse, Poplar or Bow, the drive east along the A13 and the A1020 to the terminal takes around 12 minutes off-peak and about 16 minutes at busy times. From Whitechapel and Bethnal Green, allow 15 to 20 minutes.
London City’s terminal is compact, and many short-haul travellers with hand luggage leave home about 90 minutes before departure. Always check your airline’s own deadline, but for business trips to Europe, few London addresses are better placed.
Which of the bigger airports is closest?
They are surprisingly close to one another in time. Stansted is about 37 miles away and takes around 62 minutes via the A12 and the M11. Heathrow is about 23 miles away and also takes around 62 minutes, via the Limehouse Link, the A4 and the M4. Gatwick is about 46 miles away and takes around 64 minutes, because the fastest route runs east to the A2 or the A20 and round the M25 rather than across London.
In the rush, each takes about 80 minutes. With so little between them, the flight usually decides the airport.
Is the Elizabeth line from Whitechapel quicker to Heathrow?
Often, yes. Whitechapel is on the Elizabeth line, with trains running west to Heathrow, and at busy times the train will usually beat a car across central London. We would rather say so than sell you a slower journey.
A car makes more sense with heavy luggage, children or several travellers, or for flights before the first trains. It also saves the walk to the station and the walk from the Heathrow platform to your check-in desk, which with a large case is further than it sounds.
Does the Congestion Charge apply?
For almost all of the borough, no. Tower Hamlets is outside the Congestion Charging Zone, apart from a small area right on the City boundary around Aldgate and Tower Hill. Journeys from Whitechapel, Wapping, Bow and the rest of the borough do not incur it.
If a route to Heathrow ever passes through the zone during charging hours, the charge is included in your fixed price. Chauffeurs usually take the Limehouse Link and the boundary roads, which avoid it.

How do pickups work on the borough’s streets?
Wapping’s streets are narrow, cobbled in places and lined with warehouse conversions whose entrances face the river. Give us the building name and the road-side entrance, and the chauffeur will wait there. In Spitalfields and around Brick Lane, many streets are busy, one-way or closed to traffic on market days, and the chauffeur will meet you at the nearest open road.
For the large estates in Stepney, Poplar and Bethnal Green, tell us the block name and the nearest road the car can reach. For the new towers along the river and around Canary Wharf, many have a concierge and a set-down area.
How do early Stansted departures work?
Stansted’s first wave of departures leaves before 07:00. From Bow and Mile End, the A12 leads quickly to the North Circular and the M11, and at that hour the drive takes well under an hour. For a 06:30 flight, a pickup at about 03:40 leaves two hours at the terminal.
The Stansted Express, from Liverpool Street, is the rail alternative, and it suits travellers near the western edge of the borough with light luggage.
Can you connect London City with another airport?
Yes. London City to Heathrow takes around an hour and ten minutes off-peak, and London City to Gatwick about an hour via the Dartford Crossing and the M25. Plan connections generously, and we will tell you honestly if the gap between flights looks too short.
What about Victoria Park and the Olympic Park edge?
Victoria Park hosts large summer concerts and festivals, and on those days the roads around the park in Bow and Hackney Wick are closed or crowded from the afternoon into the night. The same happens near the Olympic Park on stadium event days. If your pickup is in Bow, Old Ford or near the park on a busy day, we will suggest a meeting point on a road outside the closures, such as the A12 side of Bow, and plan the route east rather than through the crowds.
Which car suits a Tower Hamlets journey?
The Mercedes E-Class suits one or two travellers and handles narrow streets well. Families with holiday luggage should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases. For groups travelling together, the V-Class keeps everyone in one vehicle.
