Heathrow to Kensington and Chelsea transfers
Heathrow to Kensington and Chelsea
This is one of the shortest airport runs into central London: about 14 miles, almost all of it on the M4 and the Cromwell Road, taking around 28 minutes off-peak and about 41 minutes in the rush. There is no Congestion Charge at the Kensington end.
The M4 leaves Heathrow heading east and, a few miles later, becomes the Cromwell Road, which runs straight through the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. For that reason, the borough is one of the easiest destinations in London for anyone landing at Heathrow, whether they are going home to a house in Chelsea, checking into one of the many hotels on the Cromwell Road or visiting the museums in South Kensington.
This guide covers how long the drive takes, where it ends in different parts of the borough, the Piccadilly line alternative and the return journey.
This guide explains how a Heathrow to Kensington and Chelsea transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.
Why is the drive so direct?
Because there is barely a turn in it. From the airport spur, the car joins the M4 eastbound, passes the Chiswick roundabout, crosses the Hammersmith flyover and is on the Cromwell Road within about twenty minutes on a good run. From there, Earl’s Court, Gloucester Road and South Kensington follow one after another.
For Notting Hill and the north of the borough, chauffeurs may use the A40 from the airport’s northern side instead, arriving along Holland Park Avenue. For Chelsea, the car leaves the Cromwell Road at Earl’s Court or South Kensington and heads south towards the King’s Road.
How long will it take when you land?
An early-morning arrival often reaches Kensington in under half an hour. At the height of the weekday rush, from about 07:30 to 09:30, the M4 inbound and the Cromwell Road can push the time to 40 minutes or more. Evenings are usually easier inbound, because most traffic is leaving London.
Our route data gives about 28 minutes off-peak and 41 minutes at busy times for the borough as a whole. Chelsea addresses south of the King’s Road add a few minutes; Earl’s Court is the quickest.
Where does the car drop you?
For the hotels along the Cromwell Road, many have a forecourt or a lay-by, and the chauffeur will pull in and help with the bags. For homes on the squares and terraces, where parking is resident-only and streets are often one-way, the chauffeur will stop as close to your door as the street allows. For mews houses, tell us which end of the mews to use.
If you are arriving for a stay at a serviced apartment, give us the building name and any access instructions, as many have a key collection point or a concierge.
Is the Piccadilly line worth considering?
The Piccadilly line runs directly from Heathrow to Earl’s Court, Gloucester Road, South Kensington and Knightsbridge, so for a single traveller with a small bag it is a genuine option, and it is not affected by traffic.
It is, though, a slow line with many stops, busy at peak times, and the stations have stairs and escalators. After a long flight with cases or children, a car door to door is the calmer choice, and on this route it is also usually quicker.

Heading to an exhibition at Olympia?
Olympia, the exhibition centre on the western edge of Kensington, hosts trade fairs and shows throughout the year, and many exhibitors fly into Heathrow the day before with samples and stand materials. The drive is even shorter than to central Kensington, often 25 minutes, because Olympia sits just off the Cromwell Road near the Hammersmith end.
Tell us the show and whether you need to go to the hotel first or straight to the halls. For display cases and boxes, the V-Class has the space; describe the items when you book so we can plan the vehicle.
What about families arriving with young children?
After a long flight with toddlers, a short, direct drive is a relief. Tell us the children’s ages and we will fit the right seats before the pickup, so there is no struggling with straps in the car park. Pushchairs, cots and car seats you are carrying take room; the V-Class is the comfortable choice for a family of four with luggage.
Is there a Congestion Charge?
No. The whole of Kensington and Chelsea lies west of the zone’s boundary at Park Lane, and the route from Heathrow does not enter it. That is one reason this route is good value compared with journeys into the West End or the City.
How does the chauffeur meet you at Heathrow?
The chauffeur follows your flight and waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal, holding a board with your name, just beyond the exit from customs. If your flight lands early, the chauffeur will already be there; if it is delayed, the pickup moves without you needing to call. From the hall, it is a few minutes’ walk to the car park.
What about going back to Heathrow?
The return is equally direct: the Cromwell Road west, the M4 and the airport spur. On a weekday afternoon, the westbound Cromwell Road can be slow from about 16:00, so for an evening long-haul flight allow about two and a half to three hours from pickup to departure. Heathrow’s £7 drop-off charge is included.
