Victoria is a hub for three kinds of arriving traveller: visitors staying in the hotels around the station and in Pimlico and Belgravia, passengers connecting to a coach at Victoria Coach Station, and people heading for trains to Kent from the Southeastern side of the station. Each needs a slightly different drop-off, and the roads around Victoria are busy enough that knowing the right one matters.

This guide covers the drive from Heathrow, the drop-off points, the Congestion Charge, and the rail alternatives, which all involve at least one change.

This guide explains how a Heathrow to Victoria transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.

About 17 miles door to door. The rush-hour bar includes a standard allowance for London traffic; chauffeurs pick the line on the day.

How long does the drive take?

About 37 minutes off-peak and about 54 minutes in the weekday rush, on a route that follows the M4 and the Cromwell Road to Knightsbridge, then Grosvenor Place or Sloane Street down to Victoria. Early morning arrivals are the quickest; a weekday arrival between 08:00 and 09:30 is the slowest.

The final approach to Victoria, around the station forecourt and along Buckingham Palace Road, is often the slowest mile of the journey, particularly in the morning when buses and coaches are arriving.

Can you drop me at Victoria Coach Station?

Yes. Many travellers land at Heathrow and continue by coach to other parts of Britain or to Europe. The coach station is on Buckingham Palace Road, a few minutes’ walk south of the railway station, and the chauffeur will drop you at the nearest point where a car can stop and show you the entrance.

For a same-day coach connection, allow at least two and a half hours between a long-haul landing and the coach’s departure, to cover immigration, baggage reclaim and the drive. If your flight is delayed and the connection is at risk, we will tell you straight away so you can change your coach ticket.

What about a train from Victoria to Kent?

Southeastern trains from Victoria run to Kent, including Canterbury, the Medway towns and the coast. If you are travelling on from Heathrow, the chauffeur will drop you at the entrance nearest the Southeastern platforms, on the eastern side of the station. For a train with a reserved seat, allow a generous margin after a long-haul landing.

Connecting from Heathrow to Gatwick via Victoria?

Some travellers with a connection between Heathrow and Gatwick plan to take the train into Victoria and the Gatwick Express out again. It works, but with luggage it means two trains, a crossing of London on the Underground or in a taxi, and a long walk at each end, and it is rarely quicker than going direct.

A car from Heathrow to Gatwick runs round the M25 and takes about an hour off-peak, without going near central London. For a same-day connection with bags, it is almost always the better choice. Our Gatwick to Heathrow guide covers the direct journey in detail, including how much time to leave between flights.

Landing at Terminal 3 from long-haul?

Terminal 3 handles many long-haul flights from North America and the Middle East, and its arrivals hall can be busy in the early morning wave. The chauffeur waits in front of the arrivals doors with a name board and walks you to the short stay car park, a few minutes away through a covered walkway. The route out joins the M4 spur almost immediately.

Which hotels can the car reach?

All of them. The larger hotels on Buckingham Palace Road and Victoria Street have set-down points at the entrance. In Pimlico, the smaller hotels in the terraces of Belgrave Road, Warwick Way and the streets around them are on one-way roads with residents’ parking; the chauffeur will stop as close to the door as possible and carry your bags in.

Does the Congestion Charge apply?

Yes, during charging hours. Victoria is inside the zone, so an arrival between 07:00 and 18:00 on a weekday, or between 12:00 and 18:00 at weekends and on bank holidays, incurs the £18 daily charge. It is included in your fixed price when it applies. A landing that brings you into Victoria before seven on a weekday avoids it.

Is the train a good alternative?

There is no direct train. The usual options are the Piccadilly line to Green Park or Hammersmith and a change, or the Heathrow Express to Paddington and the Circle or District line. With light luggage, both work.

With cases, children or a tight onward connection, the car is simpler: one vehicle, no stairs, and a drop-off at the exact entrance you need.

How does the chauffeur meet you at Heathrow?

The chauffeur follows your flight and waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board. If you land early, the chauffeur will already be there; if you are delayed, the pickup moves automatically. From the hall, it is a short walk to the car park beside the terminal.

What about the return to Heathrow?

From Victoria, allow about three hours before a long-haul flight on a weekday afternoon. The route west along the Cromwell Road and the M4 is busiest from about 16:00. Heathrow’s £7 drop-off charge is included, and the chauffeur sets you down at your terminal’s departures kerb.
