Chelsea, between the King’s Road and the river

From Chelsea, Heathrow is about 15 miles away and takes around 31 minutes when the roads are clear. Gatwick is closer than it is from most of central London, at about 64 minutes, because the river crossings lead straight south.

Chelsea runs from Sloane Square along the King’s Road towards the World’s End, and down to the Embankment and Chelsea Harbour. It is a district of garden squares, terraced streets, mansion blocks and the long, busy line of the King’s Road, with the Royal Hospital and its grounds on the river.

Because Chelsea faces both ways, towards the M4 and across the Thames, it has good access to London’s two biggest airports. This page explains which crossing chauffeurs use for Gatwick, how the King’s Road and the Chelsea Flower Show affect timings, and how pickups work on Chelsea’s narrow residential streets.

How long does the drive to Heathrow take?

About 31 minutes off-peak and 45 minutes in the weekday rush. From Sloane Square and the east of the district, the car joins the Cromwell Road; from the World’s End and Chelsea Harbour, chauffeurs often head up through Fulham to the A4 or the Hammersmith flyover. Both routes meet the M4 at Chiswick.

For long-haul flights, a pickup around three hours before departure is usually comfortable. On a Friday afternoon, when both the Cromwell Road and the M4 are at their heaviest, add a little more.

Which river crossing do chauffeurs use for Gatwick?

That depends on the traffic and the car. Albert Bridge, the most direct crossing from much of Chelsea, has a strict weight limit and is closed to larger vehicles, so chauffeurs driving the V-Class use Battersea Bridge or Chelsea Bridge instead. From there, the route runs south through Wandsworth and the A3 to the M25, or through Clapham and the A23.

Either way, Gatwick is about 38 miles and around 64 minutes off-peak, rising to about an hour and a half in the rush. That is a little quicker than from most central London addresses north of the river.

How does the King’s Road affect a pickup?

The King’s Road is busy from morning to late evening, with bus lanes, loading restrictions and heavy foot traffic, especially on Saturdays. If you live on it or just off it, the chauffeur will usually wait on a side street, such as one of the roads leading down to the river, and message you with the exact spot.

For the residential streets and squares between the King’s Road and Fulham Road, parking is resident-only and many streets are one-way. The chauffeur will stop as close to your door as the street allows and come to you for the bags.

What happens during Chelsea Flower Show week?

The Chelsea Flower Show, held each May in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, brings heavy traffic, coach parking and road restrictions to the streets around the Royal Hospital Road, the Embankment and Sloane Square. Journeys to or from those streets take longer for the whole week.

If your pickup falls during the show, we will suggest an earlier time, and the chauffeur may meet you on a street outside the busiest area. For arrivals, the route home avoids the show traffic where possible.

How do pickups work at Chelsea Harbour and the riverside?

Chelsea Harbour has private roads, a marina and a hotel, and access is controlled at the entrance. Give us the building name, and the chauffeur will come to the right block or the hotel entrance. For the riverside apartments along the Embankment and at Lots Road, tell us the entrance with a drop-off point, because some face the river path rather than a road.

How do Stamford Bridge match days affect the World’s End?

Chelsea’s ground at Stamford Bridge sits on the Fulham Road at the western edge of the district. On match days, the Fulham Road, the streets around the World’s End and the approaches to Fulham Broadway fill with fans for a couple of hours before kick-off and after the final whistle, and parking is suspended across a wide area.

For a pickup at the western end of the King’s Road or in the streets around Lots Road on a match day, we will suggest a time that avoids the crowds, or a meeting point on the Embankment side. For arrivals landing close to the end of a match, the chauffeur approaches via the Embankment rather than the Fulham Road.

What about London City and the other airports?

London City is about 11 miles east and takes around 41 minutes via the Embankment and the Limehouse Link, or close to an hour in the rush. For short-haul business trips, Heathrow is often the easier choice from Chelsea, even though City looks closer on a map. Luton takes about an hour and ten minutes via the Westway and the M1, and Stansted about an hour and a half.

Is Chelsea inside the Congestion Charge zone?

No. The zone’s western edge runs along Park Lane and Grosvenor Place, and all of Chelsea lies to the west of it. A pickup here does not incur the charge, and journeys west to Heathrow or south to Gatwick do not enter the zone.
