The Stansted Express runs from the station beneath the airport terminal directly to Liverpool Street, and for a traveller with a small bag heading for the City, it is the obvious choice. So why book a car? Because a lot of Stansted’s flights land at hours when trains are infrequent, because the line is closed on some weekends, and because many people arriving with families and holiday luggage do not want to carry cases through two busy stations.

This guide sets out the honest comparison and then covers the car journey for those who need it.

This guide explains how a Stansted to Liverpool Street transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.

About 38 miles door to door. The rush-hour bar includes a standard allowance for London traffic; chauffeurs pick the line on the day.

When should you take the Stansted Express?

When you are travelling alone or as a couple, with luggage you can manage, heading for Liverpool Street or somewhere close to it, and landing when the trains are running normally. In those conditions, the train is quicker than a car at almost any time of day, because it does not depend on the M11 and the A12.

When is a car the better choice?

When you land very late at night or very early in the morning, outside the train’s busiest hours. When there are three or more of you, when you have several large cases, children or someone who needs help. When your destination is beyond Liverpool Street, in Shoreditch, Hackney or Bethnal Green, where the station leaves you with a second journey. And on weekends when the line is closed for engineering work and buses replace trains for part of the route.

Which route does the car take?

South on the M11, then either the A406 North Circular and the A12, or the A12 all the way in through Leytonstone, Stratford and Bow, and finally along Mile End Road and Whitechapel Road to Aldgate and Liverpool Street. Our route data puts it at about 38 miles. The slowest parts are usually the A12 through east London and the approach to Aldgate in the morning rush.

How long should you allow?

About 71 minutes off-peak and up to 103 minutes on a weekday morning. At night, when many holiday flights land at Stansted, the drive is much quicker, often under an hour. That is exactly when the train is least convenient, which is why late arrivals make up a large share of our Stansted to Liverpool Street journeys.

What about engineering weekends?

The line between Stansted and Liverpool Street is closed on some weekends for planned engineering work, and on those days rail replacement buses run for part of the journey. With luggage, that turns a simple train ride into a coach, a change and a train. Check the planned works for your date. When the line is closed, a car is usually the easier choice, and weekend roads into east London are often lighter.

Flying out before the first train?

Stansted’s busiest departure wave is between about 06:00 and 08:00, and for the earliest flights, the first Stansted Express from Liverpool Street does not arrive in time to allow for check-in and security. For those flights, a car from the City or east London is the practical choice. At 03:30, the roads are empty, and the drive to Stansted usually takes under an hour.

Travelling as a group?

For a group heading to the City for a conference or a celebration, the train means carrying everyone’s luggage on and off the Stansted Express and across Liverpool Street’s concourse. The V-Class takes up to six passengers with bags and goes to the hotel or venue door. For larger groups, we can send two or more cars timed to arrive together.

Where does the car drop you?

For the station itself, at the nearest point where a car can stop on Bishopsgate or Liverpool Street. For hotels around the station and in Shoreditch, at the hotel entrance. For offices in Broadgate, which is largely pedestrian, at the entrance your reception uses for cars on the surrounding streets.

Does the Congestion Charge apply?

Yes, for Liverpool Street and the City during charging hours: the area is inside the zone, and the £18 daily charge is included in your fixed price when it applies. Addresses in Shoreditch, Hackney and Bethnal Green are mostly outside the zone.

Where will the chauffeur meet you at Stansted?

In the arrivals hall of the single terminal, just past the exit from baggage reclaim, holding a board with your name. The chauffeur follows your flight, so a late arrival or an early one moves the pickup automatically, and walks with you to the short stay car park.

And going back to Stansted?

For the return, the Stansted Express is again quick for light travellers. For a car, allow about two and a half hours before a short-haul flight in the morning, and more on a Friday afternoon, when the M11 northbound is busy. For the first departures of the day, before 07:00, the car is often the only practical option from central London. Stansted’s £10 set-down charge is included.
