The journey from Heathrow to Richmond is short and almost entirely local, along the A4 and the A316 or through Hounslow and Isleworth. It suits people coming home to Richmond, Twickenham, Teddington or Barnes, and visitors who choose to stay on the river rather than in central London, close to Kew Gardens, Hampton Court and Richmond Park.

It also carries a surge of international rugby fans several times a year, when Twickenham hosts matches. This guide covers the route, those match weekends, visits to the borough’s landmarks, and where the car drops you.

This guide explains how a Heathrow to Richmond upon Thames transfer works from start to finish: the road, the timing and when the alternatives make more sense.

About 10 miles door to door. The rush-hour bar includes a standard allowance for London traffic; chauffeurs pick the line on the day.

Which way does the chauffeur go?

For Richmond town, Kew and East Sheen, the usual route leaves Heathrow on the A4 eastbound, turns onto the A312 or continues to the A316 Chertsey Road, and comes into Richmond over Twickenham Bridge. For Twickenham, Teddington and Hampton, chauffeurs often use the southern perimeter road and the A316 or the A308, which is quicker for those addresses.

Because the journey is short and local, the time depends more on junctions than on motorways, and it varies less through the day than routes into central London.

Flying in for a rugby international?

Twickenham Stadium hosts England’s home internationals, including Six Nations matches and the autumn series, and many fans fly into Heathrow for the weekend. Richmond and Twickenham hotels fill up, and on match days the A316, Whitton Road and the streets around the stadium are closed or crowded for hours.

If you are landing on the morning of a match, tell us, and we will plan the route around the closures and get you to your hotel or as close to the stadium as the restrictions allow. For groups travelling together, the V-Class keeps everyone in one vehicle. After the match, we can take you back to Heathrow once the crowds have eased.

Visiting Kew Gardens or Hampton Court?

Kew Gardens is about 20 minutes from Heathrow, and Hampton Court Palace about the same. Some visitors land in the morning and spend the afternoon at one of them before checking in to a hotel. The chauffeur can take you straight there, and your luggage on to the hotel. Tell us the plan when you book.

Both have busy visitor car parks and set-down points at the main entrances; the chauffeur will drop you at the gate you need.

Staying in Richmond instead of central London?

For many visitors, Richmond is a quieter and greener base than central London, with the river, the park and fast trains to Waterloo. It is also a short drive from Heathrow, which makes it a sensible choice for a first or last night of a trip, before or after an early flight.

The chauffeur will drop you at your hotel entrance, or for a rented house, as close to the door as the street allows. Many roads on Richmond Hill and in Petersham are narrow and parked on both sides.

Relocating to Richmond with a family?

Richmond and its neighbours are popular with international families moving to London, partly because of the schools nearby, including the German School in Petersham and the Swedish School in Barnes, and partly because of the parks and the easy run to Heathrow. A relocation arrival often means a family, a lot of luggage and a first night in a rented house or a serviced apartment.

Tell us the number of passengers and cases, and the children’s ages so we can fit the right seats. For a family with the luggage of a move, the V-Class or two cars may be needed. If the keys are being collected from an agent on the way, add the agent’s address, and we will include the stop.

Which terminal is quickest for Twickenham and Teddington?

For the southern half of the borough, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 are often the quickest, because the car can leave by the southern perimeter road and head east on the A30 or the A316 without passing the central terminal area. From Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, the chauffeur usually takes the A4 and the A312 south. The difference is a few minutes, but on a Twickenham match day, the right exit avoids the worst of the stadium traffic.

Is there a train from Heathrow to Richmond?

Not a direct one. Rail journeys involve a bus or a change, usually via Hounslow or Feltham, and take longer than the drive. With luggage, the car is the practical choice on this route.

Where will the chauffeur meet you?

In the arrivals hall of your terminal, with a board showing your name. The chauffeur follows your flight and adjusts to delays. From the hall, it is a short walk to the car park, and the drive to Richmond starts almost immediately.

Is there a Congestion Charge?

No. The route stays in west London and does not go near the zone.

And the journey back?

Richmond to Heathrow is equally short. For a long-haul flight, a pickup about two and a half hours before departure is usually enough; on a match day at Twickenham, allow more and check the timing with us. Heathrow’s £7 drop-off charge is included.
