Wandsworth airport transfers
Wandsworth, between the M4 and the A3
From Wandsworth, Heathrow is about 16 miles away and takes around 35 minutes on a clear road. Gatwick is about 27 miles and just under an hour, and Clapham Junction, in the borough, has fast trains to Gatwick.
The London Borough of Wandsworth runs along the south bank of the Thames from Putney and Wandsworth Town to Battersea and Nine Elms, and south through Earlsfield, Southfields, Balham and Tooting. It is a busy residential borough, with a lot of families, a lot of commuters and one of Britain’s busiest railway stations at Clapham Junction.
For air travel, Wandsworth has good access to both of London’s big airports. Heathrow is reached along the A3 and the A205 towards the M4 or via Putney Bridge, and Gatwick along the A3 and the M25 or the A24 and the A23. This page explains both, when a train is the better choice, and how to plan around the Wandsworth gyratory. Our separate Battersea guide covers Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station.
How long does it take to reach Heathrow?
About 35 minutes off-peak and around 46 minutes in the weekday rush. From Putney, the route usually crosses Putney Bridge and runs through Fulham to the A4 and the M4. From Wandsworth Town, Earlsfield and Southfields, chauffeurs may use the A205 South Circular and the A316 to reach the M4 or approach from the south.
For a long-haul departure, a pickup about three hours before the flight is usually right. The approaches to Putney Bridge and the South Circular through Sheen are the slow sections on a weekday morning.
How does the Wandsworth gyratory affect journeys?
The one-way system around Wandsworth town centre, where the A3, the A205 and the A217 meet, is one of the busiest junctions in south-west London. Journeys that start near it can take ten minutes to get clear at busy times.
Chauffeurs know the approaches and often use side roads to join the main route beyond the gyratory. For addresses on the one-way streets around the town centre and the Southside shopping centre, give us the exact entrance so the chauffeur can arrive from the right direction.
Is the train from Clapham Junction better for Gatwick?
For a solo traveller near the station with light luggage, often yes. Fast trains run from Clapham Junction to Gatwick, and the journey is quick. We would rather say so than sell you a longer journey.
A car makes more sense from Putney, Southfields and Tooting, where reaching Clapham Junction means a bus or another train, and for families, heavy luggage or early flights. Clapham Junction’s platforms are long and busy, and with several cases, the car from your door to the terminal kerb is simpler. By road, Gatwick is about 56 minutes off-peak via the A24 and the A23 or the A3 and the M25.
Which parts of the borough are closest to each airport?
Putney and Roehampton are closest to Heathrow, at around half an hour. Tooting and Balham are a little closer to Gatwick, via the A24 through Colliers Wood and Morden to the M25. Wandsworth Town and Earlsfield sit in the middle, and for them the flight usually decides the airport.
London City is about 49 minutes away across central London, and Luton and Stansted are over an hour each.

How do pickups work on Wandsworth’s streets?
The terraced streets between the commons, often called the Toast Rack and the Tonsleys, are narrow, one-way in places and heavily parked. The chauffeur may stop a few doors along and walk to your door for the bags. Some streets near Tooting and Balham are inside low-traffic schemes; give us your postcode and any access details.
Balham High Road, Tooting High Street and Upper Richmond Road have bus lanes and loading restrictions for much of the day, and the chauffeur will wait on a side street and message you. For the riverside flats in Wandsworth and Putney, give us the building name and the road-side entrance.
What about families travelling for school holidays?
Wandsworth has a lot of families, and school holiday departures are some of our busiest journeys from the borough. Tell us the ages of the children when you book, and we will fit the right child seats. For a family of four with a week’s luggage, the V-Class is the usual choice; add pushchairs and car seats in the notes.
For the busiest summer Saturdays, we suggest a slightly earlier pickup for Gatwick, because the M25 and the M23 fill with holiday traffic from mid-morning.
Can you bring me home after a late landing?
Yes. The chauffeur follows your flight, waits in arrivals however late it lands, and drives you home. Late-evening arrivals at Gatwick are common, and a booked car avoids the question of whether the last trains to Clapham Junction are still running. The fixed price does not change if the flight is delayed.
Which car suits a Wandsworth journey?
The Mercedes E-Class suits one or two travellers and copes well with narrow streets. Families should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases. For groups heading to a wedding or a celebration abroad, the V-Class keeps everyone together.
