Ealing airport transfers

Ealing, on Heathrow’s doorstep

Heathrow is about 12 miles from Ealing and takes around 24 minutes on a clear road, or about half an hour in the weekday rush. RAF Northolt, used for private flights, is even closer, and Luton is under an hour up the M1.

Ealing sits on the western side of London between the A40 and the M4, the two main roads to Heathrow. The borough takes in Ealing Broadway, Acton, Southall, Hanwell, Greenford, Perivale and Northolt, and it is one of the places where living in London and flying often go together: plenty of airline crew, airport staff and frequent travellers call it home.

For most Ealing residents, the airport journey is short. The things worth planning are the time of day, the Hanger Lane gyratory, and whether a car or one of the borough’s several direct trains suits your trip better. This page covers all of that, along with the less obvious airports.

How quick is the drive from Ealing to Heathrow?

Quick. From Ealing Broadway, the route runs west along the A4020 Uxbridge Road or south to the M4, and reaches the terminals in about 24 minutes off-peak. In the weekday rush, allow about 31 minutes. From Southall and Hanwell it is a little shorter; from Acton, a little longer.

That short journey changes how you plan. For a long-haul flight, a pickup about two and a half hours before departure is usually enough. For a short-haul flight with hand luggage, many travellers leave two hours before, but always check your airline’s own check-in deadline.

Why does Hanger Lane matter?

The Hanger Lane gyratory, where the North Circular meets the A40, is one of the busiest junctions in London, and it sits on the edge of the borough. On a weekday morning or a Friday afternoon, the queues can add fifteen to twenty minutes to any journey that has to pass through it.

For Heathrow, chauffeurs from central and southern Ealing usually avoid it altogether by heading south to the M4. For Luton, Stansted and London City, the gyratory is harder to avoid, and it is the main reason those journeys vary so much by time of day. The chauffeur checks it before setting off and chooses the route accordingly.

Is the train a better choice to Heathrow?

Sometimes. Ealing Broadway has the Elizabeth line, which runs directly to the Heathrow stations, and the Piccadilly line runs from Acton Town and Ealing Common. With a small case and a daytime flight, either is a sensible choice.

A car makes more sense with heavy luggage, children, or a flight before the first trains of the morning. It also saves the walk from the Heathrow platform to your check-in desk, which at the larger terminals is longer than many people expect. And on the way home after a long flight, a car from the terminal kerb to your front door is hard to beat.

Can you meet private flights at Northolt?

Yes. RAF Northolt, which handles civil business aviation through a dedicated terminal, is about six miles from Ealing and around 21 minutes away along the A40. Access is controlled, so we need the handling agent’s name and passenger details in advance. The chauffeur will go to the civil terminal rather than the main gate.

What about Luton, Gatwick and Stansted?

Luton is about 36 miles and around 55 minutes away via the North Circular and the M1, making it a realistic choice for short-haul flights. Farnborough, the business aviation airport in Hampshire, is about 54 minutes away via the M4 and the M3.

Gatwick is about 53 miles via the M25 and takes around 70 minutes off-peak, or an hour and a half in the rush. Stansted is further still, at about 84 minutes. For both, we suggest leaving plenty of time, especially on a Friday.

How do pickups work in Ealing?

Ealing Broadway town centre has one-way streets, bus lanes and a pedestrianised shopping area, and the chauffeur will meet you at the nearest point where a car can stop. In the residential streets around Ealing Common, Pitshanger and the Brentham Garden Suburb, the car can wait at your door.

Southall Broadway is busy for much of the day, with loading restrictions along the main road. If you live on or near it, the chauffeur may wait on a side street and message you with the spot. For flats in the new developments around Acton and Southall Waterside, give us the building name and the entrance you want to use.

What is the journey home after a long-haul flight?

Short, which is its best feature. Many long-haul flights from the Americas, Asia and the Middle East land at Heathrow between 05:00 and 08:00, and the chauffeur will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board whether the plane is early or late. From the terminal to most Ealing addresses is under half an hour at that time of day.

After a night flight, the last thing most people want is a train platform and a walk from the station with cases. Book the return leg when you book the outward journey, give us the flight number, and the pickup will follow the flight automatically.

Which car should you book?

For the short Heathrow run, the Mercedes E-Class covers most trips. Airline crew and frequent flyers often choose it for its simplicity. Families with holiday luggage should book the V-Class, which takes six passengers and six large cases.

If you are travelling with a wheelchair user or someone who needs extra help getting in and out of the car, tell us when you book, and we will plan the vehicle and the pickup point around it.
